Kurtley Beale’s hopes of winning selection against the British and Irish Lions are in tatters after he was suspended again for another alcohol-related indiscretion.
The troubled Wallaby star has been suspended for a week by the Melbourne Rebels after going out drinking, breaking a condition of his return from suspension.
Beale is understood to have gone to a Melbourne Storm NRL game last Saturday night and on to a bar, drinking alcohol.
He also missed a mid-week appointment with a psychologist, which was part of his on-going treatment programme.
Last Friday night, the 24-year-old Beale returned to the side from a month-long suspension for an alcohol-fuelled incident in South Africa in which he struck two teammates Cooper Vuna and Gareth Delve.
He came off the bench early in the second half and almost sparked a come-from-behind upset win over the Chiefs.
It’s another big setback for Beale, who had appeared to have won back the trust of Wallabies coach Robbie Deans after receiving counselling since the South Africa incident.
“The light’s gone on so to speak for him,” Deans told AAP last week.
“He’s much better for the processes he’s gone through and continues to go through.”
Rebels interim chief executive Rob Clarke said more discussions were planned about Beale’s immediate future.
“We’ve taken the view with the Australian Rugby Union and the Rugby Union Players’ Association that the appropriate action to be taken here was to stand him down for one match and for training,” Clarke said.
“That is the only decision that’s been taken at this time and that’s appropriate given that we are still piecing the story together.
“There hasn’t been any major public incident here or a crisis out in public.
“It’s just that Kurtley has breached those behavioural guidelines that he signed up to and agreed to when returning to the club.”
