Farrell to sit out 2024 Six Nations and prioritise wellbeing

captain Owen will miss the 2024 as he takes a break from international .

The news was revealed by his club , where he is also skipper, with Farrell looking to put his mental wellbeing first after a busy 2023.

A statement, released on his club’s website, read: “ has decided to take a break from international rugby in order to prioritise his and his family’s mental well-being. This means he will not be available for selection for the 2024 Six Nations.

“He will continue to play for Saracens and captain the club. As always, Owen will have the full support of everyone at the club.”

The news comes off the back of a rollercoaster year for Farrell which has twice seen him banned for high tackles that have received red cards, before being returned straight into international action at the earliest opportunity on both occasions.

The first preceded a disappointing Six Nations campaign where England finished with less wins than defeats for the third year in a row, while following the second he was parachuted into England’s campaign where he helped his country to third-place after scoring 75 points in five matches, more than any other player at RWC 2023.

Farrell has had a close relationship with head coach and former Saracens teammate Steve since the latter took the top job 11 months ago, and as ever he could rely on the backing of his boss.

Borthwick said: “Everyone at is fully behind Owen’s decision.

“Since making his debut, he has been an integral part of the England set-up for over a decade, and the demands on elite athletes are extremely challenging.

“He is an exemplary player, captain and leader and always gives his all for his country.

“It is with typical courage that Owen has made this decision to open up in this manner.

“Together with all of us at England Rugby, I will do everything I can to ensure that he has the support he requires going forward.”
