Uruguay‘s exit from the Rugby World Cup has ended in acrimonious circumstances after police were called to an incident at a restaurant in Kumamoto.
Two players were questioned by police for alleged assault on a restaurant worker, who claims they were tackled to the ground.
While the restaurant is considering filing a criminal complaint for damage to the property after drinks were spilled over DJ equipment, as well as punched-in walls and mirrors and the tearing of a stuffed bear.
According to Kyodo News, a senior member of the World Cup organising committee has travelled to the business in person to apologise.
“Even if it happened in their private time, their behavior is regrettable. As the organizing committee of the host country, we hope to address it in good faith,” a committee official said.
Members of the Uruguay team headed out into the city following their 35-13 defeat to Wales on Friday.
A scoreline which flattered Wales who were stymied in the first half by the South American nation.
The incident appears to have been nipped in the bud with the Uruguay team set to land in Montevideo on Wednesday.
