O’Callaghan signs new Worcester deal

Worcester have announced that British & Irish Lion Donncha O’Callaghan has signed a new deal with the club.
O’Callaghan, who made the move to Sixways in September 2015 after 17 seasons with , will continue his playing career after an impressive two-year spell with Warriors.
In his first season at Sixways, the Irish star played in every single game and has yet again been an all-important component of the side, having made 19 appearances in this campaign.
O’Callaghan, 38, captained the side for the first time in January against Enisei-STM in the European , and was soon handed the armband by new Director of Rugby Gary Gold in the Premiership, leading Warriors to a memorable win over in February.
Since taking over the captaincy, O’Callaghan’s Warriors have been on a remarkable run which has seen them rack up 17 points in seven games, including wins over Rugby and Rugby.
O’Callaghan’s passionate approach on and off the field has seen him become a firm favourite amongst the Warriors faithful and he was also named the Supporters Club Player of the Season in 2016.
During a glittering international career, O’Callaghan made 94 appearances for , winning the Six Nations Grand Slam in 2009 while also having played four times for the , captaining them in in 2009.
He said: “Our recent form has been reasonably encouraging and that provides us with a decent platform for next season.
“People often talk about what Warriors can become but it really is time we started to deliver consistent success on the field. Nothing else is acceptable.
“I believe we have the staff and the squad to compete next season, and I am really excited by the challenge.”
Gold added: “Donncha is a phenomenon. He must be one of the most professional rugby players in the world and the manner in which he prepares for matches, mentally and physically, is an outstanding example for any young player.
“We are delighted he has agreed to remain with the Club next season.”
