James Botham, grandson of England cricket legend Sir Ian Botham, will make his Wales U20s debut against Scotland on Friday.
The blindside, who recently featured in the World Seven Series with Wales making his international debut at the Wellington tournament and again featuring in Sydney, is one of three debutants in the starting XV.
The other two in line for their international debut are No.8 Aled Ward and wing Corey Baldwin. Two more are set to do so from the bench in hooker Owen Hughes and fly-half Arwel Thomas.
Head coach Jason Strange has stayed true to his commitment for all his players to experience top level competition but at the same time having the luxury of including members of last season’s Grand Slam winning team in starting full-back Rhun Williams and replacement scrum-half Reuben Morgan-Williams.
Elsewhere in the team, there are first starts for outside centre Cameron Lewis and hooker Corrie Tarrant.
With the match set to take place on Broadwood Stadium’s artificial pitch, Wales have trained at the Arms Park in Cardiff in order to familiarise themselves with the surface.
Strange said: “The pressure for places in the squad has increased the competitive feeling amongst the squad, and after capping eight new players against England, it’s good to be able to blood some more this week.
“That’s exactly what we need travelling to Scotland, who boast some really good individuals and a big pack of forwards.
“We may have a smaller pool of players to choose from than other nations, but we more than make up for that in talent.
“We’ve played some very good rugby in our past two games, and the job for the team this Friday is to build on that.”
