Scotland kicked off their World Cup campaign with a comprehensive 45-10 win over Japan in Gloucester today.
Following their exploit against South Africa in Brighton on Saturday, many were expecting Japan to trouble the Scots who struggled with form in 2015.
But the four-day turnaround proved too much to overcome in the end and tries from John Hardie, Mark Bennett, twice, Tommy Seymour and Finn Russell while Greig Laidlaw kicked 20 points from the tee.
Japan only trailed 12-10 just after the break as No.8 Amanaki Mafi went over in the first half with full-back Ayumu Goromaru kicking the conversion and penalty.
Laidlaw kicked Scotland 6-0 in front with two penalties but it was Japan who scored the opening try of the game 14 minutes in.
Turning down a long-range penalty, the Brave Blossoms opted to go for a lineout and, following a sublime change of angle, their driving maul sent Mafi over. Goromaru converted and Japn had a slender 7-6 lead.
But their discipline proved costly as Laidlaw slotted two more penalties before Kotaro Matsushima was, hashly, sent to the bin for illegally playing the ball in the ruck.
Laidlaw missed the resulting penalty and Japan held on all the way to half-time although they needed a superb cover tackle from Goromaru to deny Scotland from scoring their first try.
Trailing 12-7, Japan had the better start in the second half and they closed the gap to two mere points thanks to a penalty from Goromaru.
Two minutes later, Scotland finally managed to break the Japanese defence as Hardie barged his way over in the left corner.
But the Scots failed to catch the restart handing the possession to Japan before conceding a penalty. They were let off the hook however as Goromaru hit the post.
Gaps started to open in the Japanes defence and Scotland made them pay just before the hour with Stuart Hogg slicing through the defence two phases later, Bennett ran a nice line to score and make it 24-10.
Seymour got a third intercepting a loose pass on his 22 and racing over outrunning the last defender with ease.
Bennett then showed he had the power to match his pace as he barged through two defenders to seal the try bonus-point.
The last ten minutes were a procession and birthday-boy Russell wrapped up a good display from Scotland who play the USA at Elland Road in Leeds on Sunday.
