Samoa made a winning start to their World Cup campaign with a 25-16 success over the USA in Brighton.
Playing in the stadium that saw Japan beat South Africa, the Islanders led 11-0 on the half-hour thanks to a try from Tim Nanai-Williams and two penalties from Tusi Pisi.
Saracens‘ full-back Chris Wyles reduced the gap with a try but another penalty from Pisi had Samoa 14-8 in front at half-time.
Captain Ofisa Treviranus was next on the scoreboard with a try before Pisi’s fourth penalty and one from Mike Stanley ten minutes from time secured the win despite a late effort from Chris Baumann.
