Six Nations – rash of fresh injuries in run up to opening fixtures

In just over a week host at the Millenium Stadium in the inaugural match of this year’s tournament. The opening weekend also sees host and Scotland visit France in what promises to be a frenetic 3 days!
Last time England visited Wales in the Six Nations (two years ago), England collapsed to a 30-3 defeat, which effectively ended their hopes of winning the tournament. Not only will ‘s men be looking to avenge a raw defeat, but also start this campaign in a positive light; especially as it represents the last chance at silverware before the World Cup.
England are currently joint favourites (with Ireland) for the Six Nations at 7/4; but England’s prospects be bolstered by the rash of injuries Ireland have suffered at half-back. Jonathan Sexton’s concussion will only rule him out for 1 game, but Conor Murray, his regular partner, is suffering neck injury and presumptive potential replacement Eoin Reddan has strained medial knee ligaments in club action.
England suffered a big blow when Number 8 Billy Morgan broke a leg playing for at the beginning of the month. Now the squad has been hit by fresh injury concerns as Brad Barritt (knee) and Luther Burrell (concussion) are both out of contention; to be replaced by flanker Tom Croft and uncapped Christian Day. Add that to recent injuries suffered by Owen , Kyle Eastmond, Tom Wood and Geoff Parling and the injury situation for England has turned from great to dismal in just a matter of weeks!
Scotland duo David Maitland will miss Scotland’s opener in France, but are expected to return for the latter part of the tournament. Scotland do not find themselves particularly well backed (bookies price them at a long 33/1 to win outright); but a win at the Stade de France could be a game changer; as the Scots play 3 of their subsequent 4 matches at Murrayfield.
Bookmakers are preparing for a busy period during the Six Nations; a time when many new customers will sign up. We’ve already seen some competition over odds and new customer offers and much more can be expected as we approach next Friday’s opener. Just one week left until the country collectively forgets football and settles down for the rugger, for a little while at least. We can expect an even more tight contest than usual; as all teams attempt to demonstrate their worth before this Summer’s World Cup!
