Conrad Smith will miss New Zealand‘s last Test against England after breaking his thumb on Saturday.
The All Blacks centre still finished the Test in Dunedin despite suffering the injury early in the second half and will be unavailable for five to six weeks.
The 77-Test veteran will be replaced by either Malakai Fekitoa or Ryan Crotty with the All Blacks going for their fourth consecutive whitewash against Northern Hemisphere nations.
Head coach Steve Hansen said: ”What we thought was only a muscle injury has turned out to be a broken bone for Conrad Smith in his thumb so he won’t be considered for Saturday unfortunately.
“We have an idea who will start but we don’t need to tell England which one we’re going to go for.
“Fekitoa been playing well and it’s just whether we think he’s ready to start. Ryan’s been there and done that, and been in the atmosphere. That’s what it’ll come down to – whether we think Malakai’s ready to start or not.”
