England survived a late scare but beat Australia 26-24 to win the Plate at the Las Vegas Sevens yesterday.
Captain Tom Mitchell and Jeff Williams went over in the first half but the Aussies got two of their own through Cameron Clark and Greg Jeloudev to see the score levelled at 12-12.
Mike Ellery and Marcus Watson crossed under the posts early in the second half to put Simon Amor’s men in control.
Peter Shuster and Shanon Walker hit back for the Australians but, scoring in the corner, they could only convert once and fell short.
Earlier, England fell 24-7 to New Zealand in the Cup quarter-finals with Waisake Naholo grabbing a hat-trick.
England remain in fourth place in the World Series standings but are now 25 points adrift from South Africa who climbed to the top of the ladder beating New Zealand in the final (14-7) for the second tournament in a row.
In the other finals, Fiji defeated Kenya 35-0 in the Bowl while the United States thumped Spain 31-0 in the Shield.
