England U18s beat Australia Schoolboys

Two late tries from captain James Chisholm and Will Haywood set U18s on the way to a hard-fought 23-3 victory over the Australian Schoolboys at Harrow School today.
Despite dominating possession for long periods, England struggled to break down their southern hemisphere rivals in front of over 1,000 spectators.
The score was stuck at 9-3 after three penalties from fly-half Tom Morton but scores from No.8 Chisholm and wing Haywood secured the win in the last ten minutes.
Head coach John Fletcher said: “I’m delighted for the guys. I thought that the scoreline reflected the game.”
“it just took us a little while to get going but the fact that we didn’t give in, and we kept on pushing, is a real testament to their character and I’m really pleased that they were able to get the win.”
England started brightly and opened a 6-0 lead through playmaker Morton as  struggled to get a foothold in the game.
Their troubles were exacerbated when fly-half Andrew Deegan was sent to the bin and Morton added a third penalty to make it 9-0.
But the tourists rallied and, after England centre Nick Tompkins was also shown a yellow card, Deegan returned to the pitch to get his side on the board and reduce the gap to 9-3 at half-time.
The Aussies started the second half well but could never break England’s outstanding defence. England were in the same predicament though and with only six points the difference they were at the mercy of a converted try.
It looked like Australia were finally going to cross the line with ten minutes to go but they dropped the ball and were made to pay for it by a cold blooded England side.
From the , the ball went wide to Tompkins who got read of one defender with ease before unleashing winger Howard Packman down the right wing.
Following a nice break, Packman found his captain in support who rested two wannabe tacklers to score the vital try.
In the last phase of play, some swift handling down the saw Haywood go over in the corner for good measure and conclude a strong display ahead of the European early next year
Man of the Match Tompkins added: “It was a really tough match against tough opposition. I felt that we maybe tried too much in the first half but as the game carried on we opened them up a little bit and that was pleasing.
“We’re a close group and this win showed that I think, it wasn’t going all our way but we stuck at it and we’re delighted.”
