Ben Ryan has been named as Fiji Sevens head coach, it was announced today.
The 42-year-old stepped down from the England Sevens head coaching role last month after seven years in charge and was tipped to lead the Great Britain team at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
But he will instead lead the Pacific Islanders, who finished third in the overall standings of the World Series last year, as rugby returns to the biggest sporting event in the world. Ryan has signed a contract running until the end of 2016.
As part of his role as Fiji’s national team head coach, Ryan will also develop local coaches and the game of sevens throughout the country.
Ryan said: “Half of me is super excited and the other half is really nervous. It’s huge. There is so much talent, it’s the national sport and I have always loved the way the Fijians play the game.”
