If you’re attending the 2023 rugby world cup it is set to be an absolute corker. The best bookmaker bonuses are already available to predict who you think will make the final. Hopefully, the close proximity of the games to the UK will attract large numbers of fans who can egg us on to victory.
Not sure of who to bet on yet? No worries. The betting bonuses are available right up until the fixtures start. However, you will need to plan your trip in advance, so here is a short guide on the best things to do in each city, as well as the more important question: where to find the cheapest pint.
Bordeaux
Population: 249,712
Most famous for: Wine
Cheapest pint: The Grizzly Pub
Best hungover activity: Parc Bordelais – a large park with kids activities (if you need) and a wonderful chillaxing space. Whilst others go to visit the Place du Parlement or Grosse Cloche, you can chill out in this city green space kids and noise free.
Best day off activity: Dune of Pilat (Grande Dune du Pilat) is the tallest natural sand dune in Europe. 60 km south of the city, it is definitely a trip to do when you have a whole day but SO worth the panoramic sea views and a cheeky dip in the gorgeous sea!
Best gift idea: A bespoke bottle opener (hand luggage friendly) or Bordeaux wine.
Lille
Population: 234,475
Most famous for: Being friendly
Cheapest pint: Old Dirty Biniou
Best hungover activity: Zoo de Lille – if you want a small, quiet environment in which to check out some cool red pandas and chill out whilst you recover, the zoo in Lille is one of the top rated small zoos in Europe.
Best day off activity: Dunkirk. Lying 75 km from the centre of Lille, there is an option to take the train for 1 hour to get there. Definitely worth a visit to soak up a true piece of history.
Best gift idea: Old fashioned candy such as Bêtises de Cambrai (candy cane candy) as it originates from here!
Population: 522, 969
Most famous for: Renaissance architecture and ruins
Cheapest pint: Johnny’s Kitchen
Best hungover activity: Teatro Galo-Romano – ruins of a large Roman theatre complex.
Best day off activity: Geneva! The home of a beautiful lake and delicious chocolate. It only takes 1hr 45m by train to reach from Lyon. You can also take a self guided walk by the river if you wanted to stay closer to the city but still have a good day out.
Best gift idea: Anything from Kiosque in Lyon. All the gifts are made in the city and there is a huge variety of everything from sauces to chocolates to scarves!
Marseille
Population: 870,731
Most famous for: Being the oldest city in France
Cheapest pint: Bar Marengo
Best hungover activity: Palais Longchamp. Super scenic gardens and water features, a perfect oasis of calm away from the hustle and bustle of the Old Port or queues of the Basilica.
Best day off activity: Chateau D’If. A large island fortress and a former prison, situated on a small island just off the coast of Marseille.
Best gift idea: Savon de Marseille – the world famous soap originating from the city.
Nantes
Population: 303,382
Most famous for: Muscadet wine
Cheapest pint: Ruin Bar Bouffay
Best hungover activity: Chateau des Ducs de Bretagne – a big ol’ castle with a lovely garden and cool interior.
Best day off activity: Mont St. Michel is a 2.5 hour drive away, and if you haven’t been it is definitely worth the travel time! If you have already visited this gem however, I recommend taking a day trip to the Castle of Saumur, half the distance from Nantes and atop a hill for panoramic views of the Loire valley.
Best gift idea: local wine!
Nice
Population: 342,522
Most famous for: Beaches, food and history
Cheapest pint: Van Diemen’s
Best hungover activity: Promenade des Anglais. Flump (gently) onto the pebble beach and relax, or walk off the night before in the sun along the meandering beachfront path.
Best free day activity: Book ANY French riviera sightseeing tour – go to Monte Carlo, Monaco or even St.Tropez!
Best gift idea: Herbes de Provence
Saint Etienne
Population: 173,821
Most famous for: Coal mining industry
Cheapest pint: Soggy Bottom
Best hungover activity: Planetarium de Saint-Etienne. A lot of the information is exclusively in French, but it is a quiet and beautiful indoor activity.
Best day off activity: Hiking in Pilat Regional Park. Perfect in fair weather! IF, by this point in the World Cup, it has started to get a bit grey, I recommend Annecy. A beautiful city situated a good 2 hour drive from Saint Etienne which has a wonderful Old Town and lake.
Best gift idea: Pralines
Saint Denis
Population: 111,103
Most famous for: Religious history
Cheapest pint: Au Chalet des Artistes
Best hungover activity: Stade de France (of course!). Take a tour when there are no matches on and learn more about this awesome venue!
Best day off activity: Go into Paris and explore
Best gift idea: Anything you want.
Population: 471,941

Cheapest pint: Chez Tonton
Best hungover activity: Jardin Japonais Pierre Baudis, Japanese gardens and tea house. Perfect for a quiet afternoon stroll before dinner.
Best day off activity: Albi, the world’s largest brick cathedral (it’s really impressive, trust me!) It is a UNESCO World Heritage city, so if you’re not a fan of religion, there are plenty of scenic streets and exquisite gardens to visit. Oh, and amazing cuisine too.
Best gift idea: Toulouse sausage or any jam.
