Much of a break this summer?
Didn’t seem like it. We were straight back after three weeks but I managed to squeeze in a city break to Berlin and a week in Lisbon, which was really nice.
Promotion sunk in fully yet?
Just about. Couldn’t believe how long the season was or how we came through it, but we always had belief.
Gutted to leave Quins last year?
Confidence was knocked but I knew in my heart I hadn’t taken my chances. But coming to London Welsh has done me the world of good and it’s a great club.
Good working for Justin Burnell?
He’s been behind me from day one, giving me work-ons and then letting me do my stuff. He and Gordon Ross have really lifted my confidence.
Lot to prove in the Prem now?
Yes. Whilst I have experienced it, I want to go back and show my worth and prove that I really belong in that top-flight arena.
Where did you start in rugby?
Reeds Weybridge RFC was my first club. I was always pretty zippy and progressed through county teams before Quins picked me up.
Who spotted you from Quins?
The legend that is Collin Osborne. All the boys, right up to Chris Robshaw, have been coached by him on the way. I still follow some of his advice.
Play any other sports growing up?
I did a lot of athletics at school but my first love was basketball – fun to play and very satisfying. Michael Jordan was my biggest hero growing up.
Follow a football team?
I’m a big Liverpool fan. Two of my closest friends are big Reds supporters so I’ve always followed them. It’s a good time to be doing so.
If you could be another sportsman?
Roger Federer. He’s such a good character, is always immaculately turned out and he has the perfect outdoor lifestyle. Aesthetically, he’s very pleasing to watch.
How do you chill-out?
I’m a massive film buff and am always on top of what’s coming out and who’s playing who. Two of my favourites are Inbetweeners and Wolf of Wall Street.
Any good at cooking?
Love my food but girlfriend tells me I don’t cook enough. Usually standard stuff but I can also do a decent duck confit.
If you could invite three special dinner guests?
Leonardo DiCaprio, my favourite actor; Morgan Freeman for his voice; and someone from back in the day to do the singing, like Frank Sinatra.
Rituals or superstitions?
Always have to do some box-kicking at training and I wore the same lucky lycra undershorts all last season. Lost them now, though.
Pet hates or annoyances?
People who eat with their mouths open. Cai Griffiths was the worst. He’s gone now but he was doing it over the phone the other day. Disgusting.
Best and worst banter at LW?
Ollie Stedman is shocking. Throws loads out there to see if any sticks but it’s just utter garbage. Best is Nick Scott for his Will Robinson abuse.
Best and worst dressed?
Best is Will Robinson, who always wears a three-piece suit on nights out. Slicks back his hair and thinks he’s the Great Gatsby. Worst is Stedman again – awful pink T-shirts and stuff like that.
Must watch TV/things you turn off?
I’m currently into the Sons Of Anarchy, about a biker gang who run guns out of California, and for lighter viewing I enjoy Modern Family. But I can’t abide Made In Chelsea and Only Way Is Essex. Used to love them but it’s worn thin.
25 new players at Welsh – wow?
Been interesting! Massive squad with new boys turning up from everywhere but it’s good for competition and everyone’s been full-on.
Optimistic for the season?
We’ve got confidence and we’ll surprise a few people. We’ll take staying up but as long as we keep our standards high, I think we can do better than 10th.
