Room 101: Sam Wilson – Hull Ionians wing

Sam Wilson1. Noisy eaters
I’m sure every squad has one of these and ours is second row Alex Campbell. On Thursday we all sit down to have a meal together as a squad and watching Alex eating doesn’t make for good viewing. He chomps a lot and half of his food ends up down his front.
TRP verdict: We’ve  bitten on this one all right!
2. Cyclists
Like most kids I had a bike but I’ve rarely been into cycling since. When the Tour de comes around you see loads of people out and about on brand new bikes clad in all the latest Lycra gear. Give it a week or two and most of those bikes will be left rusting away in the garage. My personal dislike of cyclists comes down to the fact they hold everyone up. I live on a farm surrounded by country roads and it’s virtually impossible to get past them – especially when they ride two abreast instead of in single file.
TRP verdict: Now you’re going up through the gears.
3. Winter
As a winger I don’t expect to see much of the ball from this point of the season until the arrival of spring. Wet conditions and freezing cold temperatures mean the game ends up being a scrap up front with little chance to spread the ball wide. Space on the edges is a lot tighter as it is in National One anyway so it’s easy to be squeezed out of a game. Thankfully our home ground is quite sheltered but some of the others in the division are really exposed to the elements. I remember being particularly bad.
TRP verdict: … only to be frozen out this time.
