After many weeks of speculations, the Newport-Gwent Dragons announced today that Dan Lydiate will leave the Welsh region at the end of the season for “an undisclosed European team”.
Despite suffering a broken and dislocated ankle earlier this year, the 24-year-old Wales flanker, who was named player of the tournament in last year’s 6 Nations, is one of the hottest property in Europe and his potential move led to many speculations.
He was heavily linked with a big-money move to Top 14 outfit Racing-Metro but he reportedly turned his back on the Parisian side and is open to other offers. Toulouse and Munster are believed to be interested in signing him but a move to the Premiership as a marquee signing could also be an option for the Welsh star.
“We are obviously very disappointed that Danny has decided to leave the Dragons,” said Dragons Director of rugby Rob Beale.
“He has been a key part of our set up for several years and is popular with both the players and the coaches.
“I can assure our supporters that we did all that we could to retain Dan’s services but we simply cannot compete with the offers which have been put on the table.”
