The days of London Welsh as a professional club are over after the RFU refused them permission to stay in the Championship.
The Exiles went into liquidation last month and were granted a temporary licence on December 22 to play their last two league games of 2016.
The licence expired on January 21 and the RFU says London Welsh have not met the conditions required to extend that licence.
Welsh had been hoping to complete the season as a phoenix entity, but they were unable to provide a bond to the RFU or show evidence they would be able to pay rugby creditors in full.
All their results will be expunged from the Championship, and there will be no relegation from the second tier this season.
RFU chairman Andy Cosslett said: “It is deeply regrettable that we should arrive at this point, but with London Welsh in liquidation and unable to satisfy conditions to compete in The Greene King IPA Championship as a professional club, participation in the competition became untenable.
“We know this will be an extremely disappointing day for everyone connected with London Welsh, including players, staff and supporters, and the sadness at the loss of this club from the professional ranks will be shared throughout the game.”
