With England spoilt for choice at full-back but injury-ravaged in the centres, Elliot Daly admits he would love some clarification from the international set-up as to where his best position lies.
England Saxon Daly, 20, has already racked up an impressive 58 Wasps first-team appearance but has no full-time position, having started at centre while also featuring on the wing before last season’s move to full-back.
That latter switch put Daly on Stuart Lancaster‘s radar as he was called into the England squad during the Six Nations and this summer scored a superb try for the Barbarians against the Red Rose.
Daly’s preferred position is outside centre but because of Andrea Masi’s long-term injury he appears set to continue at No.15 for Wasps.
He said: “I am not sure about my best position and it’s something the selectors higher up need to talk to me about. I’ve played 13 throughout my career and last season was my first at full-back. Mind you, in both positions you’re looking for a way to insert yourself into the game.
“If I had to choose I’d pick centre to play but I’m loving it at full-back and if that is where the team need me to play, that’s where I’ll play.
“Obviously England have their injuries in the centres at the moment but I cannot really think about that too much at the moment. My first focus has to be on Wasps.”
A broken bone in his foot hampered Daly’s start to the season and his first appearance came last weekend in Wasps’ initial win of the campaign against Worcester.
Capable of kicking goals from distance as well as cutting clever lines, be that at 13 or 15, Daly impressed with five Premiership tries last season.
Daly, who says the top six has to be a minimum requirement for Wasps this term, said: “We want Heineken Cup rugby and that first win against Worcester was huge.”
