1. Mark Irish – He is a great hard-working forward, who gets around the field. He is a rock and has a solid ability at the breakdowns, scrum time and in the set-piece.
2. Joe Duffey – I’ve played with and against him and I prefer to have him on my side of the scrum. He is an abrasive ball-carrier as well as a solid lineout thrower.
3. Jason Hobson – Has a very physical edge to his game and can definitely deliver a strong right hand shoulder. Unlucky to get only one cap for England.
4. Ian Nimmo – Solid ball-carrier with a real presence around the field. He’s certainly a character who would do his best to make a nuisance of himself and disrupt your play.
5. Nic Rouse – Like myself, Nic was at Nottingham, left and has since returned. I’d pick him because of his immense work-rate and great understanding of the game. He would be my lineout specialist and also my leader on the pitch.
6. Sione Kalamafoni – He could always be counted on for forceful ball-carrying during his time at Nottingham. Also hugely aggressive in defence and he has made a real impact at Gloucester.
7. Brent Wilson – Works tirelessly around the pitch, never misses his tackles and is just everywhere you need him – just what you want from your seven and a great teammate at Nottingham.
8. Tom Brown – Plays in Wales now but spent a long time in England. Dynamic ball-carrier, made hard yards and sent defences backwards. On top of this he was a big hitter in defence.
9. Tim Usasz – Tim was our little sniping general. He gave it all the chat, annoying the opposition at the same time as leading our forwards well. He would always play the team onto the front foot.
10. James Arlidge – He’s a great goal-kicker and has been instrumental in putting us where we are now. He sets the tempo and runs the show exceptionally well.
11. Alex Lewington – Alex is a new face and may not be very well-known across the country. He’s in the Tigers academy and is a great prospect – you can’t beat a bit speed on the wing.
12. Tim Molenaar – Tim will offer some real power in midfield and he’s a very strong ball-carrier. He’s physical and abrupt in defence, while still orchestrating and distributing well.
13. Matt Smith – He can play across the backline at Leicester but I’d have him at 13 because of his running ability. He can make great swerving outside breaks and is a threat to any defence.
14. Tom Varndell – I’ve already mentioned that I like to have quick guys out wide so it’s no surprise that Tom gets in. He has an incredible try-scoring record and also offers a physical presence.
15. Luke Arscott – We played together at Bristol and he was great at taking counter-attacking opportunities. He just picks a gap and breaks free through it. He’s also safe under the high ball and has been brilliant since he moved to Exeter.
