1. Jason Leonard – A fantastic scrummager who played over so many different eras and lasted an incredible amount of time in top class rugby with Harlequins, England and the Lions.
2. Keith Wood – Dynamic ball-carrier for Harlequins. Innovative and ahead of his time, Keith brought excitement and tremendous skill to the position when it was still a very traditional role.
3. Carl Hayman – Incredible scrummager who was a man mountain for Newcastle.
4. Paul O’Connell – A natural born leader and a terrific lineout organiser and jumper with a high work rate. Paul is the type who leads from the front and sets an example for the rest to follow.
5. Martin Johnson – Martin is a World Cup winner with vast experience who was a great motivator of players. He was incredibly passionate and a tremendous team player.
6. Richard Hill – Another whose career spanned a vast amount of years in top class rugby, and who adapted at different times to the game. He was talented enough to play in any of the back row positions if needed.
7. Olivier Magne – I played with Olivier at London Irish and he was a real class act. He had an ability to think about the game in a different way which set him apart.
8. Zinzan Brooke – I have to go for Zinzan after his time at Quins. He was an exciting player who was ferocious at the breakdown but also had the talent to carry the ball and identify space, and work his team into scoring positions.
9. Rob Howley – Attacking scrum-half who had a great sense for identifying weaknesses. He could break tackles and always crossed the gain line – he kept defences honest.
10. Jonny Wilkinson – He’s lasted the test of time and his dedication and ability to perform under pressure are remarkable. So many times he saved Newcastle. When you thought you were winning he’d claw them back.
11. Shane Williams – Shane had the ability to score tries out of nowhere. His career spanned a long time for Wales and the Lions, and he scored some incredible tries.
12. Seilala Mapusua – He had pace, power, fantastic hands and could really weight a pass. He also had vision and could break down defences.
13. Brian O’Driscoll – He’s the greatest centre of all time. He scores the tries but away from the glamorous side of his role he’s a ferocious competitor in defence and in rucks and mauls.
14. Jason Robinson – Jason was very similar to Shane in his sheer ability to turn any game in an instant. He could dismantle the most organised defences so quickly, for Sale, England and the Lions.
15. Carlos Spencer – He wasn’t a regular in that role but I saw him play there for Northampton and Gloucester. Carlos could do amazing things with the ball in hand. I have to put him in that back three – whichever one gets the ball will score tries.
