1. Ben Franks – The London Irish prop is such a big guy and he can be as strong and powerful in the scrum as he is in the loose.
2. Dane Coles – Quite a loose hooker and very skilful. Rose through the ranks to become the All Blacks No.1 hooker. Enjoys a run on the wing, too, so had to tackle him a few times.
3. Ben Tameifuna – A huge boy who puts in huge hits. He’s also very good at locking down the scrum and carrying hard. Doing well for himself at Racing 92 in Top 14 now.
4. Brodie Retallick – His name pretty much speaks for itself these days. A great leader who has achieved a lot already despite still being only 24.
5. Joe Wheeler – I used to play with the Highlanders lock at Tasman and he’s another smart player with lots of skill. I rate him and I think he could make the step up to Test rugby.
6. Steven Luatua – He’s doing very well at the Blues this season. Very hard-working and reliable whether he’s packing down at blindside or No.8.
7. Sam Cane – The heir to Richie McCaw on New Zealand’s openside. A natural leader and a great player over the ball. Super fit and can go all day.
8. Akira Ioane – I played with him on the Sevens circuit as well as Auckland in the ITM Cup. Still only 20 but he will become one of the best players around. Very powerful and a handful on the field.
9. Francois Hougaard – Great skills and quick to the rucks. So fast he can play on the wing. Helped shape Worcester‘s game in the way we want to play since he joined.
10. Aaron Cruden – Reads the game really well. For only a little guy he’s pretty ballsy and he’s not afraid to mix it up with the big boys.
11. Charles Piutau – Great feet and a big left boot. A powerhouse with skills to play across the backline who has taken the Premiership by storm with Wasps this season.
12. George Moala – Following the same path as Ma’a Nonu. He started on the wing for the Blues but he’s been moving in every season as he learns the game. Big ball carrier who’s added tricks to his game.
13. Jared Payne – A very intelligent footy player. He did all the reviews and previews when we played together at Northland.
14. Rene Ranger – Another former Northland player and he’s a powerhouse. Brings that X-factor in attack and loves bumping people off.
15. Damian McKenzie – The revelation of Super Rugby so far this year. Still very young but coming into his own this season. Full of confidence for a little whippet and has no fear. It’s like no one told him he’s shorter and lighter than everyone else!
