1. Matt Mullan – He has one of the best work rates in the game and would not be out of place even in many back rows.
2. James Hayter – It was great to be able to watch my brother playing at Harlequins while growing up. He taught me a lot about work ethic and he never took a backwards step on the field. Moved to the Scarlets before retiring.
3. Martin Castrogiovanni – I’m not the best person to comment about props but I know that he hit very hard when I played against him on a Monday night in the A-League with Worcester.
4. Joe Launchbury – Joe has an amazing ability to always seem to be in the right place at the right time. But it’s not down to luck, he reads the game so well and has the engine to go with it. He is just world class.
5. Rob Wood – Tom’s younger brother, Rob, was very unlucky with knee injuries but he was one of the best players to have on your team, completely fearless and relatable. Only 24 when he hung up the boots.
6. Ashley Johnson – I’m glad he has always been on my team. He is dangerously powerful even in a game of touch! Dynamic ball carrier and an amazing haircut!
7. Phil Burgess – I played with Phil for the Championship XV vs NZ Maoris and against him many times when he was at the Cornish Pirates. It is now great to have him with England Sevens. He has an endless work rate and great asset in both forms of the game.
8. Mark Bright – Mr London Scottish seems to be scoring tries for fun again this season. Very powerful No.8 and a big asset for England Sevens last season.
9. Joe Simpson – He is lightening quick and can change the game in an instant. He is very unlucky to still only have one England cap, but I’m sure more will come.
10. Andy Goode – Great controller of the game. More often than not he makes the right decision and doesn’t mind putting his frame in the way for a tackle.
11. Tom Varndell – Tom’s prolific try-scoring record speaks for itself. One of the best athletes in the game.
12. Kevin Maggs – Managed to pull his boots on a couple of times at Moseley. Still the best tackler at training and ran lines without fear.
13. Manu Tuilagi – I had a long few games with Wasps playing against him. Runs hard and tackles harder.
14. Christian Wade – Can make anyone in world rugby look very silly. Has great feet, amazing acceleration and can beat most defenders in a phone box.
15. Thinus Delport – Played at Stourbridge with Thinus and he was still absolutely class. Huge boot and taught me a lot when I was with him.
