Former Tonga captain Aleki Lutui believes Israel Folau should be welcomed into the Tongan rugby union set up. Folau has not played international rugby since being sacked by Rugby Australia in 2019 for homophobic comments.
Folau’s contract was terminated after he said that “hell awaits” gay people in a social media post.
Since World Rugby‘s change in eligibility rules, Folau could play for Tonga in the next World Cup due to him not representing Australia since November 2018.
Lutui believes his nation should approach Folau about playing for the country in time for the next World Cup in 2023. Folau could be a part of an exciting potential backline.
Former captain Lutui said: “If we get all our players available, we could be a force at the 2023 World Cup. Especially if our backs put their hands up and make themselves available, I think we can compete.
“But it is all down to individual player decision, if they make themselves available, I am sure they will give everything for our country.
“If we have the likes of Charles Piutau, Malakai Fekitoa, Ngani Laumape and Folau available it will be huge.”
Specifically on Folau, he added: “I think Tonga will welcome back Folau, especially as his parents are from Tonga. I think he will be proud to represent the country if he is given that opportunity.”
Homophobia controversy
The dual-code star was controversially welcomed back to rugby league after signing for the Catalan Dragons in 2020.
The winger/full back made 15 appearances for the Super League side, scoring five tries.
Folau came back into union last year when he signed for the Shining Arcs in the Japan Rugby League One, with the season starting this Saturday.
During his time with the Waratahs in Super Rugby, Folau scored 60 tries in 96 matches – more than any other player in history.
Whilst playing for the Wallabies, Folau achieved a sensational strike rate of 37 tries in 73 games.
