Canterbury……. 12
Blackheath……57
Blackheath showed their class as they humbled Canterbury by 45 points.
The new boys in National 2 East were dominant from the outset with Canterbury barely touching the ball before Blackheath opened their account after 10 minutes through Alex Harris. They followed it up with a penalty to take a ten-point lead into the second quarter.
Blackheath made an inside break with winger Harris carving through before offloading for Fred Owen to score. Tom Ffitch added the extras on a day he would be perfect from the tee.
Harris grabbed a second try as Blackheath outflanked a tight Canterbury defensive line, and two minutes later Jake Hennessey broke down the centre for the first of a three-try haul.
Canterbury did press late on in the first half but while a first maul forced a penalty, the second led to a dropped ball.
Canterbury continued this pressure early in the second half, taking Blackheath on up front and driving over. Alex Evans was the one to benefit but Frank Reynolds was unable to add the extras.
Aspate of scores followed. First Stephen Leonard crashed over, followed quickly by Hennessey’s second and one for Jake Lloyd (pictured above).
Hennessey then rounded off Blackheath’s dominant display breaking down Canterbury’s kick chase to score his hat-trick try. Canterbury did show some resilience at the end with a driving score by Reynolds.
