Brilliant Exeter are far too hot to handle

Reigning Cup champions Exeter University became new leaders on Wednesday as they destroyed Loughborough 57-26 at Topsham.

The sides met in the BUCS Super Rugby final five months ago with Exeter edging Loughborough 48-44 and while this season’s early meeting was another try fest, it was rather one sided.

Orson James’, Benjy Joseland’s and Jake Murray’s braces, combined with further tries by Seb Driscoll, Zack Wimbush and Joe Vanjer saw Exeter secure a statement victory. Tries from George Taylor, Jenson McInulty, Tomiwa Agbongbon and Chris Preen’s meant the visitors left with a bonus point but they were outplayed.

Player of the match winger Joseland said: “I’m pretty happy with that, 57 points against Loughborough, you don’t get much better than that. Thanks to the boys for putting me into space.”

Cardiff Met moved up to second with a 29-22 win over Durham courtesy Toby Baldwin’s two tries and 19 points from the boot of fly-half Sam Berry.

Hartpury are now in third following their 50 27 rout away at Cardiff, while Swansea secured their first win of the season, 39-15 over winless bottom side Nottingham.

Bath are still waiting for their first win after losing 29-19 to Leeds Beckett, who were victorious for the first time this season.

Despite their 18-10 loss at home to Hartpury, Cardiff Met maintained their position at the top of the Women’s National League but now have Edinburgh hot on their heels as well as Hartpury,. Edinburgh beat Cardiff away from home 34-12 and Loughborough started their campaign with a 49-7 thrashing of Durham.
