Saracens and former England number eight Billy Vunipola has been arrested following a violent incident in a bar in Majorca.
According to reports in The Daily Mail, Vunipola had to be tasered twice by police at 4:30am on Sunday morning after calls from security staff at Palma bar ‘Epic’.
The 75-capped England international had apparently taken off his shirt, and was threatening to throw bottles and chairs at employees and fellow customers.
After being restrained by police offers he had to be sedated in a nearby hospital, before being handed over to courts later on Sunday. He has now been released on bail.
Vunipola is expected to join Montpellier next season, and it is not known what impact this incident will have on completing the move.
That planned departure to the Top 14 effectively ended his more than decade-long international career, which spanned three World Cups and saw him win three Six Nations titles and a Grand Slam for England.
It was that Grand Slam campaign in 2016 which was arguably the peak of the 32-year-old’s career as he picked up three man of the match awards, and later that year he won a League and European double with Saracens and was nominated for World Rugby Player of the Year.
Vunipola has been no stranger to controversy, however, and was reprimanded by both his club and country after a 2019 Instagram post which supported Israel Folau’s comments that “hell awaits” gay people.
