England fly-half Danny Cipriani has plead guilty to charges of common assault and resisting arrest in a Jersey court following his arrest outside a nightclub in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
The new Gloucester signing has been fined £2,000 by magistrates and ordered to pay £250 in compensation to a female police officer, having remained in custody for 24 hours waiting for his court hearing.
Cipriani, who had additional charges of larceny and acting disorderly on licenced premises dropped, will have seven days to pay the fine or risk a sentence of ten weeks in prison.
The timing of Cipriani’s arrest comes a little over two weeks before the Cherry and Whites take on Northampton Saints in their 2018-19 Premiership opener, and after his re-entry into the England fold for June’s Test series defeat to South Africa after a three-year exile.
Appearing in the third Test in Cape Town, Cipriani was adamant he would “do everything I can” to keep his place in Eddie Jones’ plans with the World Cup in Japan on the horizon.
Cipriani’s arrival at Kingsholm led to Billy Burns departing to the PRO14 to join Ulster, while his old team Wasps are set to welcome Highlanders fly-half Lima Sopoaga to Coventry this week.
