THE officiating at the maul needs to be reviewed. When are referees going to penalise collapsing mauls in open play? Twice in the recent Scotland v Australia international, Australia collapsed (tackled) a fast Scottish driving maul, and got the put in at the subsequent scrum.
Driving mauls from attacking lineouts are rigorously refereed and the slightest attempt to collapse them penalised. Yet holding a player up in open play, then deliberately collapsing it when it is a maul is called is now an accepted play and referred as such. Whistling a static upright maul dead is fine.
