LAST week’s Rugby Paper included the following statement: “Worcester Warriors, who went into administration in 2022, have been formally invited by the RFU to consider applying to compete in the Championship.” The report suggests this would be for the 2025-26 season.
Unsurprisingly, their owner says his club will shortly be submitting their expression of interest!
Were Richmond, London Scottish and others given that option when they hit the financial buffers. They were relegated to the base of the league pyramid. So why has Worcester been given preferential treatment? And why has the RFU put their interests above those of ambitious Championship clubs such as Coventry, Cornish Pirates and Bedford?
The RFU’s actions risk bringing English rugby into disrepute.
