So the Premiership season came to a close this weekend with Northampton Saints and Bath contesting as who will be champions, regardless of the fact that Northampton finished top of the table and in doing so, putting last season’s champions to the sword.
When the play-offs were introduced, the concept was based on the impact of the Six Nations, in that some teams were considerably impacted with many key players being on inter national duty for a good chunk of the season, whilst other teams had very little or no impact, allowing them to field a very strong first team squad.
