ALONGSIDE Brendan Gallagher I was a rugby mad teenager at the 1974 England v Wales game.
Like your first love affair or car, your first rugby international is special and I remember this game well. I’d scared my mother half to death by driving from St. Ives in Cornwall to Plymouth at 4.30 in the morning to catch the only available train that would get me to London in time to watch the match.
I travelled more in hope than expectation as the Welsh team of that time was almost mythical in my eyes. I’m not sure though that I can agree with Brendan that England won more easily...
