READING Brendan Gallagher’s moving tribute to Ray Prosser reminded me of a story I once heard about an incident on the 1959 Lions tour to New Zealand.
The story goes that working class Ray formed an unlikely but firm friendship with the aristocratic David Marques, the Harlequins and England forward. During one particularly physical match Marques was given a not altogether legal going over by an opponent at the bottom of a ruck. Ray was apoplectic with rage at the incident and demanded retribution on the guilty party that would have been nuclear in its intensity.
