IN THE early 1920s the USA proved the unlikely winners of two Olympic rugby titles, beating France on both occasions. In 1920 they won 8-0 in the rain and mud of Antwerp but the match and performance that everybody remembers came four years later at the Paris Olympics.
Amid riotous scenes at the Stade Colombes they completely outplayed hosts France, scoring five tries as they marched to a 17-3 win which left the visitors requiring a police escort from the pitch and later the ground as the French fans made their displeasure known.
