JEREMY Guscott suggests that a return to the good old days when there were just two substitutes who could only be brought on for medical reasons would reduce injuries and make the game better.
If a player turns their ankle the coach is likely to substitute them before it gets worse. If the player has to stay on the field until they are unable to walk so the doctor can certify they are no longer able to continue, the player is likely to be out injured for a lot longer.
Getting rid of tactical substitutes wouldn’t ‘make the game better’ either.
