MY instinctive reaction to Colin Boag’s repetition of his proposal that the Premiership clubs be given charge of the national team was that to give even more direct control to the self-centred elite clubs would be lunacy.
On further deliberation, though, it occurs to me that this could be a golden opportunity. If the clubs were to be given a monopoly over the earnings generated by all aspects of the elite game, then they would need, in return, to guarantee the funding the RFU would need to fulfil their responsibilty towards community rugby.
