THE assertion in Peter Jackson’s column that Derek Morgan played for England but was born in Wales was factually inaccurate. As the article stated he was born in Newport: this was in Monmouthshire which until the Local Government Act of 1972 was part of England!
Indeed Newport Rugby Club always belonged to both the RFU and the Welsh RFU, and people born in the county were allowed by agreement of the two unions to opt for either country.
This didn’t materially affect the article which was, as usual with Peter Jackson, interesting and well written.
