A LOT of fans – and especially old frontrowers – are getting increasingly turned off by the time-wasting of scrums.
But there is a skills/confidence issue from years of non-compliance.
Fundamentally, the hooker’s main priority is to throw the ball into a line-out because good line-out ball can lead to a try from a maul.
Prior to 1975 the lineout throw-in was the responsibility of the winger, and once penalties kicked to touch gave possession to the side kicking to touch in the 90s, the hooker’s key skillset was to throw in, not hook.
