THE timeless debate as to the identity of the greatest Lions captain has been given a thorough airing these last few days, a topic as hot as the weather. The great and the good have been talking of Sam Warburton in the same breath as Martin Johnson, Paul O’Connell and Willie-John McBride.
The most humble of Welshmen would be genuinely embarrassed to find himself placed in such exalted company and even more so considering the omission of a compatriot from the Seventies. John Dawes is a man apart, the only one to have captained a winning Lions series in New Zealand.
