Bill Beaumont will have to be at the top of his game early in the New Year now that an SGM is in motion to remove chief Bill Sweeney as RFU chief executive.
The prospectus likely to cause maximum strife is if interim chairman Beaumont pitches to allow Sweeney to stay on, either until the end of the Six Nations, or until the 2025 Women’s World Cup, on the proviso that he then steps down.
This unacceptable calculation would allow Sweeney to depart without an SGM being called, which Beaumont and others might prefer, thinking it will avert more reputational damage to the RFU.
