There’s no Larkin about with Steve at the helm

Star signing: Josh Matavesi

CAMBORNE director of Steve Larkins believes that making the club more attractive to new players has led to recent success.

They have gone two from two in their opening fixtures in the season, with big names and new recruitment aiding their winning start.

Larkins told The Rugby Paper: “We sell that club as what it is – a great club, from the volunteers to the supporters to the facilities, to how we play.

“To have ex- players and a Fijian international in Josh Matavesi play for us, to have Kyle Moyle join us, it’s good for the future, and it’s also good for the present players helping the young players come through.”

Reflecting on two very different types of wins, with a second-half performance in round one and then a blistering start in round two and then hanging on to victory, Larkins said: “Pre-season’s gone well, the recruitment of players has gone well, and generally it’s a good pace to be, and we are in a strong position going into week three.”

Camborne hosted Titans yesterday, a side who last year played in National One and have themselves made big signings such as former Chief and man Ollie Devoto.

Larkins said: “They’ve got quality players, quality coaches – another real tough battle again. In this league, you can’t take your foot off the gas as everyone can beat everyone.”

With the league so competitive, Larkins highlights the importance of winning at home.

“You want to win all your home games, then pick up as many away wins as you can, but you’re unlikely to go unbeaten those first eight games as there are some tough away fixtures,” he said.

“If we can go that first block going unbeaten that would be incredible and give us a real springboard for the rest of the season – but we know that would be very hard.”

The main aim is to get more wins and improve on their sixth-place finish from last season by playing more measured rugby.

Larkins added: “We want to continue to play attractive rugby but want to get out of our half before we start to attack.

“We’ve also worked on not playing from everywhere. Last year we were seen as a team who played a little bit too expansive.”

Even with the ambitions Camborne have of growing the club and attracting new exciting players, family links still run strong, with Harry Larkins a regular at full-back.

The 21-year-old has made nearly 70 senior appearances for Camborne already and scored in the opening home game.
