FIJI secured a hat-trick of wins and France qualified for the quarter-finals despite winning just one of their three pool matches.
It was a 12-12 stalemate in the opening game of Pool C between hosts France and the USA. Both sides showed their class, scoring a try each per half, with standout performances from Antione Dupont and USA flyer Perry Baker.
Two-time gold medalists Fiji showed why they are the ultimate Olympic 7’s side, putting Uruguay to the sword 40-12. A stunning solo try from Waisea Nacuqu, beating three defenders, and a double from Joji Nasova sealed the win.
The hosts got a win in their second match, beating Uruguay 1912. Fans were treated to a try from star man Dupont, who broke through and showed his strength to hold off a tackle to score.
Reigning champions Fiji continued their victorious streak, beating USA 38-12, with six different players.
USA kept their playoff hopes alive with an impressive 33-17 win over Uruguay, Baker showing his class with four tries.
In the encounter everyone had been waiting for, Fiji emerged victorious over France 19-12. Despite the opening try from France, Fiji pulled away to top the group and continue their unbeaten run at the Olympics.
