ON April 26, 1980, Cardiff Arms Park staged what may have been the first club match to gross £100,000 in ticket sales, for the Welsh Cup final when Bridgend beat Swansea 15-12.
The winning captain, Meredydd James, led a team containing a trio of Lions – Steve Fenwick, Gareth Williams and, of course, JPR. How fitting that James, a veteran of 400 matches for Bridgend and arguably the best uncapped prop of his generation, should succeed JPR as the club’s president.
