FAR be it for us to fly in the face of public opinion in this corner of the paper, but the World Cup anthems are not quite the travesty they have been made out to be.
They’re far from brilliant – you’d have to be deafer than Beethoven and a whole lot less musical to go that far – but for all of us who have suffered the hideously over-egged productions of Advance Australia Fair in recent years, the choral renditions in France have sounded like the St Matthew Passion, performed in a perfect acoustic and conducted by Leonard Bernstein.
