Leicester Tigers have held talks with Scotland boss Gregor Townsend about taking over at Welford Road next season.
Townsend, 49, who won 82 caps for his country as a player, has a contract with the SRU until the end of the World Cup in France later this year.
He has been linked with a succession of jobs away from Scotland and, at one stage, his name was linked with Racing 92 before they appointed Stuart Lancaster. More recently, it broke in the French media that he has applied to become France’s attack coach but faces competition from Stade Francais coach Gonzalo Quesada.
