The only blot on the landscape in last weekend’s Rugby Championship clashes was the continued tolerance for forward passes. It had an ironic twist because two tries which featured clear forward passes were disallowed by English referees – but for other reasons.
The first incident came in the 55th minute of South Africa’s 35-23 loss to New Zealand after Lukhanyo Am’s scorching break saw him put Makazole Mapimpi over – only for it to be disallowed by Luke Pearce because of a deliberate obstruction in the build-up by Springbok scrum-half Jaden Hendrickse.
