Bath have failed with a bid to land former Argentina captain Pablo Matera, who is set to become one of the world’s best-paid players by moving to the Far East.
Bath were keen to land a big-name replacement for Wales and Lions star Taulupe Faletau and opened talks with Matera over a potential move to The Rec, but he turned them down flat. Bath could not compete with Japan League One, where an unnamed club is willing to splash out over £1 million a season for him to join rugby’s best-paid elite.
