Way back in the early 1950s – another moment when it was difficult to decide if English rugby belonged in a sit-com or a sanitorium – Max Miller was the most celebrated stand-up in the land. A typical gag? “A man asks his wife if there’s anything wrong. ‘I’m homesick,’ she says. ‘But you ARE at home.’ ‘I know. And I’m sick of it’.”
