THERE is nothing that undermines a professional sport more than being unclear about its own laws. We saw a glaring example of this last weekend at Twickenham in the key area of the scrum, as England and Ireland locked horns.
It soon became apparent that a clear directive from World Rugby, which had been passed on to its elite international panel referees, had been ignored, or forgotten, by Mathieu Raynal. The experienced French referee had been informed before the start of the Six Nations that wheeled scrums should not usually be rewarded.
