Ben Gollings has been appointed Sri Lanka Sevens‘ head coach for the next two months in their bid to reach next year’s World Cup.
The former England skipper, who amassed 2,652 points from 70 tournaments, will lead Sri Lanka through four competitions, culminating in a world cup qualifier in Singapore where 16 teams will vie for three Asian positions at the 2013 showpiece in Moscow.
Since being announced as an event for the Rio2016 Olympics, Sevens rugby is receiving much more attention which encourages national sports’ bodies and federations to invest into performance.
First up for Gollings is this weekend’s Borneo Sevens in Kota Kinabalu, followed by the Shanghai and Mumbai events before the Singapore World Cup qualifier.
Gollings said: “It’s going to be interesting. I don’t know a lot about the opposition. We will obviously be underdogs against the likes of Hong Kong and Japan.
“There is a lot of potential and the boys have got some great skills. It’s just a matter of trying to help them with those skills and understand what they are trying to do on the field to give them some form of a game plan.”
