ENGLAND players stand to collect circa £70,000-a-man from the RFU should they complete an autumn hat-trick by beating Australia and South Africa. And to think that the same RFU once forced Grand Slam-winning full back Simon Hodgkinson to return a sponsor’s prize or face automatic banishment as a dastardly professional.
All because its value was deemed to have exceeded the £25 limit placed upon such baubles and that put the unsuspecting Hodgkinson in danger of contravening the first commandment of amateurism: ‘Thou shalt not earn a penny from playing the game.’
